Must Read iolo.com Article; System Mechanic® Top Speed Tip #4: The Bandwidth-Hogging Windows Feature You Need to Disable

Please note: Feel free to use the copy below on your website/blog.

Just as Windows® 10 users have been surprised and alarmed by the aggressive data sharing covertly occurring between their PCs and Microsoft, cybersecurity and other tech sites across the web have shed light on another disruptive, buried setting--this time one that substantially hogs unwitting users' internet bandwidth: Windows Update Delivery Optimization.

The idea behind WUDO is similar to torrent sites that make large-file transfer easier (in this case, those increasingly frequent Windows 10 updates) by enabling users to share directly with each other the files associated with updates. In a nutshell, without your knowledge, Windows has signed you up for peer-to-peer-style file sharing with the millions of other Windows 10 users constantly updating their OSs to help those updates download and install faster, by spreading the bandwidth demands across the entire Windows community.

Unfortunately, your network bandwidth is limited; and now it is being directly employed by Windows to share updates with other users to ease the burden on Microsoft's servers--and presumably to make things go smoother for you, too, when it's update time on your end.

Now, the latter likely usefulness of this feature to you and others notwithstanding, you will almost certainly want to keep it disabled since you use your broadband for virtually everything you do on your computer, while Windows updates, as incessant as they can seem, are still relatively sporadic events compared to everything else you do.

Ideally, you'd be able to turn on the WUDO feature only just before downloading and installing Windows updates to help ensure the fastest update downloads. Unfortunately, unlike Windows 7, there is no option within Windows 10 to stop automatic downloading of Windows updates:

The best you can do--and should do--is keep them from completely installing without your say-so. As we'll see below, Windows indicates (in a slightly conflicting message later on in the same Windows Update settings wizard) that you have the option to let Windows install updates only after you grant permission.

Since it appears that Windows updates will download automatically, these downloads might take a bit longer than they would if the WUDO function was always enabled. But the worthy trade-off is your bandwidth will be compromised all of the time if you do not disable this function the vast majority of the time you are using your PC.

And do be sure the Automatic setting for how updates are installed has been changed to--and always remains--Notify to schedule restart (see the tip below). At least you can establish that Windows updates are not both automatically downloaded and installed without your consent or control over any part of the process.

Take back your broadband by disabling Windows Update Delivery Optimization (WUDO)
Here's how to disable this secretive and unnecessary performance drain on your precious network bandwidth:

  1. Click the Start menu button (or type "settings" in the search box), choose Settings and click Update & security (toward the bottom of the Settings window)

  2. From within the Windows Update tab, click Advanced options

  3. Under Choose how updates are installed, change Automatic (recommended) to Notify to schedule restart:.

  1. Next, click Choose how updates are delivered

  2. Under Updates from more than one place, switch the toggle to Off:

  1. Click the upper-right X to close the window; your changes will be saved

Think U.S. Regulators Are the Only One's Policing Influencer Marketing? Think Again.

PACEDM recently published a thought-provoking article on the regulation of Influencer Marketing outside of the US. Most are aware that the US FTC [Federal Trade Commission] has clear rules about influencer marketing, as do many social media platforms. What many are not aware of is it's not just US regulators that are policing Influencer Marketing. If you're an Influencer who is based outside of the US, it would be prudent to make sure that you're complying with your country's endorsement regulations and disclosure guidance. Note. To learn more about Influencer marketing rules from the FTC, click here.

Below is an excerpt of the PACEDM article.

"The Competition and Markets Authority is the British government agency that regulates advertising. According to reports, it recently sent numerous warning letters to British celebrities and other social media influencers. The warnings mirror those sent in 2017 by the Federal Trade Commission to influencers.

In tandem with the warning notices C demanding advertising practice modifications, or else C the CMA released guidelines for influencers. They are remarkably similar to the FTC endorsement guides.

Clear and conspicuous disclosure of material connects are at the top of the regulatory investigation and enforcement list. Both regulatory agencies also recommend the "clear and conspicuous" use of hashtags such as #ad or #sponsored.

The CMA guidance was published in January 2019 and stresses honesty and transparency in what is being promoted. "People need to know if influencers have been paid, incentivised or in any way rewarded to endorse or review something in their posts. It¨s important that they make this clear to their followers. This includes when a product or service has been given to them for free." The guidance also states, "[t]his needs to be clearly stated when a product, brand or service is tagged, linked or endorsed in any way."

Any form of reward, including money, gifts of services or products, or the loan of a product, is "payment" C whether it was originally asked for or it was sent it out of the blue (e.g., "freebies"). Influencers receive freebies because of their high public profile and because brands or businesses hope they might post about them in return. Influencers that have not purchased a product or service, but received it free, must make this clear.

Past relationships with a brand should also be disclosed. Marketers should never give the impression that they are just a consumer when they are actually acting for their own business purposes, or on behalf of a brand or other business. Never state or imply that something was purchased when it was provided for free, and never express or imply that a service or product was used, when, in fact, it was not.

There is a clear global trend developing to regulate not only brands, but the influencers that are paid by them. The Fyre Festival fiasco has only brought more international attention to the power of influencer marketing."
